General InformationAttireEach student will be required to wear socks and shoes to every rehearsal. Students will NOT be allowed to rehearse in the theater without covered shoes. Each student should wear comfortable clothing that enables free movement. Skirts/dresses are discouraged. Students may also want to bring a towel for perspiration and hand sanitizer.
BehaviorWe at the Paliku Academy of Performing Arts expect each student to be responsible and respectful of themselves, their peers and those involved with their instruction. If any student chooses to distract, disturb or hinder the learning of another student, s/he will first be warned. The second occurrence will result in a discussion with a parent and/or guardian. If disruption continues, s/he may be asked to leave the program.
Suggested ItemsStudents should be equipped with their script/songbook and a pencil daily for notes, changes or blocking. Extra paper and a backpack are also good ideas. Students may also want to bring bottled water and snack for breaks.
PAPA discourages bringing CD players, iPods and/or any other valuables (ie. cameras, electronic games, jewelry, etc.) to sessions. Cameras may be brought toward the end of the summer, however the Paliku Academy of Performing Arts will not be held responsible for loss, theft or damages of any items brought to sessions.
Student InvolvementOver the course of the six-week program, each student will be pushed and challenged to work hard and learn about the art of live theatre. Each student is expected to follow certain standards of behavior (as outlined in the ‘Behavior’ section above and the ‘Statement of Agreement’), be open new experiences and to come daily ready to rehearse.
Parent InvolvementIt is said that it takes a village to raise a child. As you can imagine, we have an entire production to be created and we will need the help of the community to assist us with all different areas. We will be having a Parent and Student Informational Meeting on Sunday, June 7th at 6 p.m. at King Intermediate School Room F2 (the band room located toward the back of campus. Look for green directional signs and balloons) to give an overview of the program and to give you a chance to meet the instructors and address any of your questions/concerns. As we continue throughout the program, someone may be contacting you about ways you can assist. Also, there will be information in the weekly newsletters.
Rehearsal EtiquetteAll rehearsals will be considered “open rehearsals” meaning that family members may sit in on the rehearsal. However each instructor reserves the right to close a rehearsal if the student(s) appear distracted. Please check in with our office staff prior to entering a rehearsal. Also, during rehearsals and performances, we ask that you silence all cellular phones, pagers and noise-making devices that may serve as distractions. If there is a small child with you that is causing a disruption, we do ask that you exit the rehearsal/performance and return when s/he has settled down. All of these guidelines will allow for maximum potential for each student to be in a safe and productive learning environment.
Boot CampThese days will be a time when the students can experiment and explore their hidden or apparent talents in three areas: singing, acting and dancing. We will be watching for how well they take instruction, how they work with the other students and how hard they are working. This will help us to assess their level of ability. They will also learn pieces for auditions. Each student will be expected to: 1) recite lines, 2) sing a section of a song and 3) learn a dance combination for their audition.
CommunicationEach Thursday, a newsletter will be sent home to inform you about what’s been happening with the show, needs, etc. This tool will be important, especially as we get closer to the performance dates. Ticket information, costume requirements and announcements will all be in the newsletter. If there are any immediate concerns or questions, you can always contact the Director (Mr. John-Paul “J.P.” Tai) at 808.383.6765.
